NETFLIX TV SHOWS AND MOVIES

It’s no surprise that Netflix is one of the top streaming platforms today. When it first launched, it completely changed the game—introducing us to the concept of binge-watching old shows and turning “Netflix and chill” into a cultural staple (PG, of course).

What sets Netflix apart is its smart algorithm that seems to know exactly what you're into, offering personalized recommendations and a curated watchlist you didn’t know you needed. It literally has something for every genre and every age group.

Netflix continues to reshape how we consume media by delivering on-demand, ad-free content tailored to each viewer. Honestly, they’ve got a customer for life—unless they decide to hike prices to $50/month... then we might have to chat.

But to stay on top, what should Netflix prioritize? Understanding their target audience, identifying popular genres, and timing content releases just right. So, let’s dive in!

Overview:

Objective:

  • Identify dominant genres and audience ratings across the catalog.

  • Quantify content mix (Movies vs. TV) and top producing countries.

  • Map release seasonality by month to inform slate timing.

  • Highlight underrepresented segments that present content opportunities.

Actions to create this report

  • I sorted and cleaned the data, removed unnecessary columns, and adjusted the column order in Excel.

  • Utilized DAX to create custom measures and calculated columns by applying functions such as ADDCOLUMNS, TRIM, COUNTROWS, SUMMARIZE, UNION, and FILTER to effectively manipulate and reshape the data.

  • Designed a dashboard to visually represent content types and audience data, along with a timeline-based analysis of Netflix content and release years to provide insights into the types of content being produced.

Key Insights

    • Top Production Markets: The United States, India, and the United Kingdom are the top content-producing countries on Netflix; localize marketing in these regions.

    • Catalog Mix: Movies account for ~70% of titles → bias the slate toward film-led campaigns unless a TV-led strategic push is desired.

    • Seasonality: Releases spike in July and December (summer/holiday) → concentrate high-potential launches here.

    • Audience Targeting: Adults (46%) and Teens (30%) lead consumption focus → room to grow Family/Children content.
